Innovation Studios begin in Upper School for grades 9-12. These unique courses take place in our leading-edge Baldwin Center for Innovation and Collaboration and allow our students to flex their innovative, creative, and collaborative muscles in an effort to design a solution for a real world problem. This unique - ASA course was born out of a partnership with NuVu Studio in Cambridge, MA. Based on the architectural Studio model and geared around multi-disciplinary, collaborative projects, students learn to navigate the creative process-from inception to completion-by protoyping and testing ideas and concepts.
Each Studio has a Nu Vu Fellow from Cambridge, MA that works in concert with teacher-coaches to mentor students through the iterative process. Studios receive an over-arching theme that guides the students projects. Whether designing a creative solution for a community partner or exercising the limits of their minds for one another, each group ultimately produces a tangible product, animation, film or idea. So what materials do they use? The sky is the limit! Students regularly use laser cutters, 3-D printers, soldering irons, fabric, wood, recyclables, and more.
Creative problem-solving, collaboration, innovation, iteration, synthesis of critique, empathy, tech and media literacy, documentation, and presentation rank among the skills students encounter and polish during their Innovation Studio courses. Throughout the design of their projects, students document the evolution of their problem-solving -- the germ of the idea, multiple iterations, and final prototype -- in electronic portfolios that will become part of their college resumes.
In the fall and again in the spring, students in Grades 9-12 host an Innovation Studios Exhibition where prototypes are on display for the community. Guests get the chance to explore student-projects in detail and engage in a question-and-answer session. Check out some of our student projects here!
